November 2008 U.S. Core Search Rankings
Google Sites led the U.S. core search market in November with 63.5 percent of the searches conducted, up 0.4 percentage points from October, followed by Yahoo! Sites (20.4 percent), Microsoft Sites (8.3 percent), Ask Network (4.0 percent), and AOL LLC (3.8 percent).

Americans conducted 12.3 billion searches at the core search engines, down 3 percent from October. Google Sites handled 7.8 billion core searches, followed by Yahoo! Sites with 2.5 billion and Microsoft Sites with 1 billion.

November U.S. Expanded Search Rankings
In the comScore November 2008 analysis of the top properties where search activity is observed, Google Sites led with 10.8 billion searches, flat versus October. Yahoo! Sites ranked second with 2.6 billion searches, followed by Microsoft Sites with 1.1 billion and AOL LLC with 725 million.

Ping.fm is a simple service that makes updating your social networks

Ping.fm is a very simple, useful service that enables you to send a message to 30+ social networks at once, using either standard e-mail, your mobile phone or popular IM services. Its simplicity apparently attracted two high-profile angel investors, according to a company blog post. The new backers are Reid Hoffman (who just became CEO of LinkedIn again) and Joi Ito.

We first took note of Ping.fm in late March this year, when the service was still in private beta, and we warned it could well become merely ‘a feature of a feature’. Nonetheless, the site seems to be holding its own and has attracted enough users to start having problems scaling the service.

Ping.fm apparently had its share of problems and slow response times the past few weeks, and the new capital should help them obtain more stability. From the post:

This is mainly because of not having the resources to maintain the volume of users and overall traffic we are seeing. This investment will allow us to scale our hardware to improve the reliability of our service as well as continue to increase the awesome that is Ping.fm instead of babysitting smoking servers all day.

It’s unclear how much both men have invested in the pinging service. It’s also unclear if there will ever be mainstream adoption of Ping.fm, as it seems a bit reserved to power socnet users / early adopters.

BlogRush Is Shutting Down

After careful consideration, we have decided to shutdown the BlogRush service. If you have the widget code on your blog you will need to remove it.

When BlogRush launched in late-2007 it spread like wildfire all over the Web. Thousands of bloggers were talking about it and the service exploded to become one of the fastest growing free services in the history of the Web. During the first year of the service it successfully served 3.4 Billion blog post headlines and the BlogRush widget could be found on blogs all over the world; even up until the moment we closed down the service.

BlogRush didn't grow without its fair share of problems -- from security issues to abusive users trying to 'game' the system to much lower click-rates than expected. We also had some problems with trying to fairly control the quality of the network, and in the process made many mistakes in deciding what blogs should stay or go. All of these issues, ultimately, limited the service's full potential.

Our team worked very hard to try and build a service that would truly help bloggers of all sizes get free traffic to their blogs. This was our primary focus. Not once did we ever try to monetize the service with ads or anything else. BlogRush never made a single penny in revenue. We wanted to be able to help our users FIRST and then worry about monetizing the service later. Unfortunately, the service didn't work out like we had hoped. (It happens.)

I want to say "Thank You" to all of the great bloggers that at least gave BlogRush a test to see if it would work for them. We sincerely appreciate you giving the service a try.

We have received several offers & inquiries about acquiring BlogRush, but we are choosing not to go that route. While many might think this is crazy, we truly feel it's the 'right' thing to do for our users. Believe it or not, it's not always about the money. In fact, BlogRush will have lost a small fortune when it's all said and done, and it was by choice. There were many things we could have done to monetize the service but we wanted to make sure it was going to benefit our users first.

Last but not least I want to say that I hope the failure of this service doesn't in any way discourage other entrepreneurs from coming up with crazy ideas at 4AM (like I did with this one) and from "going for it" to just try and see if something will work. Without trying there can be no success. And as we all know, ideas are worthless without action. The Web wouldn't be what it is today without entrepreneurs trying all sorts of crazy ideas.

Using Wordpress as an emulsifier to generate extra cash using Adsense seems to be a no-brainer these days. Many have experimented with a multitude of Wordpress templates to try to portray a professional look, while at the same time, thinking that if a users thinks the site looks pro, that user would be more inclined to click the Adsense ads. This is completely not true.

I too have experimented a number of ways to try to increase my Adsense earnings, but many have fallen short. Sometimes the simplest approach is the best. From my experience I have learned what has an hasn't worked with increasing Adsense earnings. I will say one thing, if you don't have the traffic then you will definitely need a high click-through rate to even find any value in maintaining your Wordpress blog if your intentsions are soley for Adsense earnings. Below are a few tips:

Only use the textual ads. If you are using the link untits, use the horizontal version and no more than three links wide. My pay per click experience will tell you that the top three ads are ussually the highest bidders. This way you are weeding out the lower bidders and therfore increasing your possibiulity of higher earnings.

We have been taught that "blending" is the way to go with tricking users into thinking that the ads are actually part of your website. This is not true. I've actually achieved a jump in my CTR with ads that actually look like clickable links. It seems purley psychological...if it looks like a link, it must be a link and therefore I must click the link. So the take away from this is to have the urls in a color that looks as much as a link as possble.

User small block text ads at the beginning, as a floating item and at the end of each of your posts. I've seen an increase in my CTR by simply closing an article with a small block of Adsense ads.

These simple techniques, when used properly can actually increase your CTR, which is a good thing if your site simply doesn't have the traffic. Increasing your chances of a click can be your money maker.

Sometimes it is tough to get started with converting your Wordpress template, but don't fret...Tony Rocks has actually created a template that they have successfully used to get double-digit CTRs with a number of their clients. The template is ugly, but if it brings home the bacon then it can't be all that bad.

Social Bookmarking Sites to promote your website

Social bookmarking sites are a little different.
Some allow you to create a profile, while others will make you create an account so that you can just post links.
But once again, do not bombard these sites with link after link (or story after story)!
I don’t know if you know this or not, but I have read that search engines (especially Google) do not like to see a site go from nonexistent to thousands of visitors a day – overnight. It’s not all that natural or normal!

So, use a modest approach and do it over time. Spread your love over time ;-)
I suggest that you keep some kind of promotion journal (in a spreadsheet) so that you can keep track of each of your sites/products and what avenues you use to help create traffic.

How to simply discover and find niches to monetize.

Successful businesses have learned that finding and exploiting a profitable "niche" is the key to profitability. This should not be a "guessing" or "I think" matter. First, make sure you understand what a profitable niche is

The Internet has no shortage of affiliate programs used for networking purposes. Look over affiliate programs to determine just what products or services they are offering and which ones are selling best. Ask yourself just which niche each product is aimed at. You, too, can utilize affiliates and sell their products on your website in addition to your own. People make a great deal of profit on the Internet through affiliates.

Create traffic to your website through writing articles

Myth 1: Since wide ads (336x280, 300x250 and 250x250) are effective in many websites, it must also be doing the same thing in my website.

Fact: Not really. Every website has its own characteristics; you cannot just follow what people said and then hope that your CTR will drastically increase. Try to do your own experiments with various ads and placements. Perhaps ads unit that are not effective in another website are your most profitable ads.

Myth 2: It's profitable to develop website that's targeting high paying keywords.

Fact: Perhaps, if you really are a Search Engine Optimization expert. It is correct that when these high paying keywords are clicked, you will get a huge amount of money. But do you realize how many people out there who also think the same thing? I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands; and you will face bloody competition to reach the top position in SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages). Without top position in SERPS, there will be no visitor; without visitor, there will be no one who clicks on your ads. Myth3: High Traffic + High CTR = High Income.

Fact: It is a perfect equation if only there is no smart pricing. High income depends of several factors, such as smart pricing and what type of website you run. I have seen many websites with high traffic, high CTR, but totally low income.

Myth4: Be careful if your traffic suddenly increases (perhaps because a popular website features one of your articles), Google might think you are doing spamming.

Fact: Nonsense. Google is able to detect your visitors from their IP addresses (if you are not net savvy, just imagine IP address as your phone number; every time you make a phone call, it will be recorded on your phone company).

If you're doing spamming, there is big possibility that all these IP addresses will be exactly the same. Beside that, Google is able to detect who your referrer is (where your visitors know your website from). If they find out that a popular blog/website is linking to your website, they will surely understand. So, don't worry about this.
